Introduction:

The following is a preliminary study of the poetic verses in the
musical compositions for the Mevlevi Whirling Prayer Ceremony
[samâ`, sema], most of which are in Persian--many of which were
composed by Mawlânâ Jalâluddîn Rûmî.

The present study is mainly based on a book containing 45 Sema
compositions [âyinler] edited by Sedettin Heper in his "Mevlevi
Ayinleri," Konya, Turkey, 1979. This book contains an index of all
the poetic verses used in the compositions. Also used is a list of
101 Sema compositions (that includes all of those in Heper's
book), kindly provided by Dr. Bârihüda TanrIkorur that contains
the name of the composition, the name of the composer, and the
first 3-5 words of the first verse of the first musical section [selam]
of each composition.

Originally, such verses were written in Arabic letters in the
Ottoman Turkish style in which Persian and Arabic words and
phrases were clearly written. However, now that such verses have
been transliterated into Romanized modern Turkish letters, it is
often difficult to understand what the words are. Furthermore, in
Heper's book there are sometimes contradictory renderings in the
musical scores when compared to the index of verses at the end of
the book.

The transliteration and translation effort here is preliminary and is
in need of correction by other scholars.

Many years ago, the present translator looked up all the verses in
Heper's index to see how many are in Foruzanfar's edition of the
Persian text (based on the earliest manuscripts of Mevlânâ
Jalâluddîn Rûmî's "Dîvân-é Kabîr").

Over five years ago, the translator translated and transliterated
eight Mevlevi compositions, which can be found at:

Also included here are the meters of most of the verses used in the
musical compositions that are authentic (that is, those verses that
are in Foruzanfar's edition of the Persian text). These have been
added because Mevlevi composers are said to have skilfully
matched the poetic meters of the verses they selected to the
musical phrases and rhythms they used in composition. The poetic
meters were found using the (mostly completed) "Ergin-Foruzanfar
Concordance," which can be found at:
